February marks the "unofficial" First Anniversary of the ADCG. We have come quite a distance in a very short amount of time. Join us as we celebrate our growth and invite you to be a part of the organization.

MGAA Newsletter

Prime Painters are meeting most Thursdays at the Senior Center, 152 Maple St., Warner Robins, at 1:30 PM. Come and draw, paint, share companionship and ideas. This is free, however the city requires that you have to be over 50 to participate.

· Let's all attend the monthly meeting on Thursday, Jan.17,at Ted Wright Park. Joy Vermilyea will be demonstrating the art of stained glass. She is a new member, moving from North Georgia, and teaches her talent at RAFB. You will be able to sign up for a Saturday workshop at the meeting. The cost will be $50.00, and there is a 5-limit opening. AND…the new officers will be installed! I was told that we have a very creative program for this, and I’m anxious to see it.



· January 8, Tuesday, the Late Bloomers will be at the Gatwick Sr. Village in Perry from 1-2:30 PM. Volunteers are needed to teach art to seniors. Contact Edna Garrett (478) 967-2817 for more information.

· The Sketching Session will be at the Nola Brantley Library, Watson Blvd. from 6:30- 8:30 PM. A live model will be provided. This is a good opportunity to practice your drawing skills in a friendly environment.Bring your own drawing materials, like charcoal, pastels, or colored pencil. · Tuesday, January 15, Willa Roseboom will sponsor Movie Night at her home. Contact Willa, 953-3224, or wroseboom@alltel.net.

· February 26 has been set as the day of Houston County’s Annual Career Scavenger Hunt. 10th graders are bussed to the Ag Center in Perry to meet and inquire about careers, and FAS will have a booth to represent the Arts. Leslie will be there, and she’d love someone to help her. Call 929-2263 to volunteer.

· Peggy Maine has an exhibit at Prinnie Mack’s the first 2 weeks in January, with Kay Nanz having her works up the last 2 weeks. In February, Allan Carey and Janice Musgrove will display their creations.

· Joycine's new space is now at 333 Cotton Avenue in Macon. Call (478) 743-3144 for information on painting classes with Barbara Barry (6 week classes), or teen and adult Drawing Classes with Peter Nishanian.

· MGAA's Winter Arts Festival is coming up Feb.15-March 15. Submit your entry now. This is a judged show open to all mid-state artists. Call 477-9557 for a prospectus.

· Jack Shields from Atlanta will be having a collage workshop March 14 & 15. Those of you who attended his watercolor workshop thoroughly enjoyed mee ting this incredible artist, and I’m excited about him being

Sketching Session

THE FINE ART SOCIETY OF MIDDLE GEORGIA Sketching Session: 6:30pm - 8:30pm Monday, January 14, 2008 at the Nola Brantley Library in Warner Robins. PaintAmerica Announces 2008 Paint the Parks Call to Entries

PaintAmerica, a national, non-profit organization to support and promote the visual arts, has announced the Call to Entries for the 2008 “Paint The Parks” National Artists’ Competition. Paint The Parks will attract many of our nations’ top artists, with a $10,000 purchase award for the Grand Prize. Many other cash prizes and purchase awards will also be available, making Paint The Parks one of the country’s richest art competitions. The 2008 Paint the Parks100 Competition and the Paint the Parks “Mini50” provide the country’s top national venue for established and emerging representational artists to showcase their talents. The competition celebrates our country’s national parks, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the National Parks Foundation (www.nationalparks.org) The competition also supports the PaintAmerica mission of providing scholarships for young artists and promoting the visual arts across America.

The Paint the Parks Competition format rewards artists with great potential for sales of their work. It also provides recognition, exposure and awareness through a national traveling exhibition and an online display. The exhibition will be shown in venues such as The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, St. Louis, MO; The RW Norton Art Gallery, Shreveport, LA; and The CACEG Gallery; Estes Park, CO. Showcasing the beauty and qualities of America’s National Park system as seen through the eyes of its artists is another benefit of the program.

The Second Annual Paint the Parks 100 carries on the tradition of the long-running Arts for the Parks competition. Last years grand prize winners were John Agnew of Cincinnati, OH for his painting “Looking for the Shore” and Ray Hunter of Santa Barbara, CA for his mini painting “Lesson on the Yellowstone”.

Entries representing any of the 390 National Parks are submitted and judged within one of the three National Park Regions. The highest scoring painting from all entries is named the Grand Prize Purchase Award Winner and claims a $10,000 purchase award. It, and the top 33 paintings from each of the three regions advance to the Paint the Parks100. Other artists in the top 100 also have the chance to receive additional cash prizes and purchase awards. Recognition is also given to the “2nd 100” artists.

The “mini” competition is for works up to 180 square inches. The full-size competition accepts work up to 720 square inches. A discounted entry is available for meeting the early deadline of May 1, 2008. The final competition entry deadline is May 31, 2008. No other painting approach is so dependent on its materials and paints for success as plein air painting. As if the bugs, wind, head, and poison ivy were not enough, inappropriate equipment and make the artist’s life miserable. History of Plein Air Painting by Ross Merrill

Plein air painting has a long history that can be documented to 1630 when Velazquez painted in the garden of the Medici palace. This lecture traces that great tradition through Rome in the late 18th and early 19th century to Paris and the French Impressionists. It also covers American 19th and 20th century landscape painting up to contemporary plein air painters.

BIO: Ross Merrill has served as Chief of Conservation from 1981 to the present. His training in art and art conservation was obtained from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Oberlin College Master’s in Fine Arts program for conservation. He has lectured extensively on conservation and painting technique to artist throughout the country. He brings an immense knowledge of painting and conservation technology to the SCAD Campus; a painter, his landscape scenes are almost always painted on site. Ross also teaches numerous plein-air painting workshops through The Art League in Alexandria, Virginia. Last year Ross Merrill was our Keynote Speaker at last year’s “SCAD Presents A Visit from the National Gallery of Art: Insights into the History, Materials, Color and Techniques of Painting, where he addressed Color Mixing Problems and Solutions, Impressionists Color Theory, and the History of Pigments.” His visit will include two lectures and a 3-day plein-air workshop that will focus on the methods of the Impressionists.

Times: Friday, 8:30 - 4:30, Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 4:30 with about
45 minutes break for lunch.

Cost: $200

Deposit: $75 - to be received by Sept. 21 (two weeks before)
Students: Minimum # 5 --- Maximum # 15 -- If we reach the 5 minimum by
that date, the class would be made, and students could keep signing up until
the day of the workshop.

First morning for about 30 minutes for meet and discuss locations -- and in
case of rain any day -- art class studio would be needed.

Description: The class will consist of instruction on composition, quickly
choosing a scene, thumbnail sketches, value, temperature, and color theory
when painting on location. Demonstrations will be in pastel, but I also
paint in oil and acrylic. Students are allowed to work in any medium as long
as they are not beginning students. Pastel students can be beginners. This
class is appropriate for beginners through advanced/professional. Most
information taught is appropriate for all mediums as the issues are specific
to painting on location versus studio. If it should rain, we will paint
still life, or from photographs -- with information on how to make a
painting look as if painted on location. Critique would be last afternoon.
Supply list will be given upon registration.
