Paint out at Indian Springs- Event news

The May 29, 2010 Plein Air Georgia paint out at Indian Springs was a huge success with twelve painters ignoring the inclement weather predictions to come to Flovilla, Georgia and capture the beauty found there. The Village at Indian Springs Flovilla, is a picturesque cluster of cottages, historic buildings, gardens, shops, deli, museum and studio/gallery that is adjacent to historic Indian Springs State Park, the oldest park in Georgia. You can still get mineral waters at the park which Indian legends say have healing properties.

Thanks to Generations Gallery, Andi Kulp, Kathy Socha and Preston King our hosts for this event along with Phyllis Franklin PAG representative, the event was perfectly organized. Each artist started the day by checking by the registration desk at Generations Gallery. At the registration desk filled with information about the local area, Preston King, event director and local artist, set each artists off with well wishes, I.D. badges, park passes, stamped canvas or paper and flyers that the artists could pass out inviting the public to a reception to be held later that day.

Indian Springs State Park was filled to capacity for the Memorial Day weekend and the PAG artists were pleased with all the opportunities to show off their talents, pass out their business cards, and connect with old and new friends. Attending this event were, Pat Burns, Peter Potter, Evelyn Henderson, Bambi Rogers,Valerie Chitvanni, R. Matthew Songer, Sandra Babb, Durinda Cheek, Preston King, Bambi Setzer, Shelia Looman and Phyllis Franklin.

Having a diverse mix of talents and mediums proved to be just the right formula for success for the end of day art reception awards presentation show and sale held at Pinky's Café. Each visitor and artist coming to the reception was encouraged to cast a vote for their favorite painting of the day. Best of Show honors went to Pat Burns for her painting "Mossy Oak". Valerie Chitvanni's "Indian Springs Rocks" received First Place and Bambi Rogers' "Break of Dawn" received Second Place. Five paintings were also sold to patrons during the show.

Generations Gallery is planning to host a fall event for Plein Air Artists dates to be announced later in the year.

Workshop offer

I wanted to reach out and share the workshops we have planned in the New England area for this Summer. I am delighted to be working with 3 artists as workshop leaders: Ray Hassard, Kirk Larsen and Ken Shuey. All will work with you in the medium of your choice aboard Airielle, a wonderful classic wooden sailboat.

This will be an exciting twist in comparison to the workshops you may have attended in the past. The student/instructor ratio is very low, we'll eat well, and take you to spots you just can't reach other than by boat. And it is really nice to unwind at the end of the day and recount the interesting stuff we did all day. All of these workshops are in reasonably protected waters, and the Summer season weather is typically very cooperative.

The following is a very brief listing of each workshop. Please follow the links to my website for more detail. The rates for the expeditions cover your bunk, food and workshop tuition.

Also, I am happy to pull together a 3 to 4 day painting excursion on another date, so gather up 4 or 5 of your painting buddies and we'll cook up your own expedition (see the sample trip ideas on my website).

June 29 to July 2 - Greenport, NY to Mystic Seaport and back to Greenport w Kirk Larsen - 4 days. $1,080

July 21 to 24 - Penobscot Bay - Camden, ME to Matinicus Island and Vinalhaven w Ray Hassard - 4 days. $1,180

July 28 to Aug 1 - Penobscot Bay - Brooklin, ME to Acadia National Park w Ray Hassard - 5 days. $1,225

September 4 - Clinton, CT to the Thimble Islands w Ken Shuey - 1 day. $250

September 5 - Clinton, CT to Falkner Island w Ken Shuey - 1 day. $250

Please join us! We'll get two sessions in each day, and come home with a pochade box full of great work.

Workshop opportunity - Grand Tetons!

Even if your career as a plein-air painter is on the rise, there is always joy in refining skills and learning techniques that keep you moving in an upward trajectory.

The Plein Air Painters of America is offering a workshop in which you will be painting with eight of the most respected plein-air masters in the country. It takes place August 29-September 4, 2010, in the Grand Tetons. We are working with the Art Association of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in putting on this fantastic opportunity to paint with the top on-location artists in one of the most scenic parts of the country.

In addition to painting five days, evening programs include a visit to Scott Christensen’s amazing studio, a provocative lecture from Joe Paquet, and a trunk show of your works followed by a reception for the PAPA exhibition.

Please see the PDF information sheet for details found on the  PAPA website or that of the Art Association of Jackson Hole. If you have questions, feel free to ask!

Thomaston Upson Arts Council

All artists in the Middle Georgia area are invited to participate in an artistic fundraiser to benefit the Thomaston Upson Arts Council Gallery and Gift Shop in Thomaston, Georgia. Please forward this email to anyone who might be interested. Thank you!

The Thomaston Upson Arts Council (TUAC) is looking for artists to participate in its first ever Art Squared Project, an art auction and fundraiser to benefit the TUAC Gallery. Artists in the Middle Georgia area are asked to donate their time and talents in an effort to raise money for better lighting and other gallery improvements. Emerging and established artists over the age of 18 are welcome to participate.

After receiving the artist application and $10 fee, TUAC will provide each artist with a 12” x 12” canvas panel (1 panel per fee, limit of 3). Artists can use any medium to create artwork in regards to our chosen theme: “Nature”.

Participants will drop off their completed work by July 20, 2010. These square works of art will be auctioned off, with all proceeds going towards the TUAC gallery. Artists will be recognized at the Art Squared Project Auction & Reception, scheduled for July 29th, 2010 at 6 p.m.

Each participating artist will receive a complimentary 2010-2011 membership to TUAC and a $10 gift certificate towards any purchase from the TUAC Gallery and Gift Shop, including other Square Art paintings. Participating artists’ web-sites will be listed on the TUAC blog.

The artist application can be downloaded at: http://www.tuac.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/Art_Squared_Flyer2010.123124017.pdf

About Art Squared and TUAC:

The Thomaston Upson Arts Council (TUAC) presents The Art Squared Project, an art auction and fundraiser to benefit the TUAC Gallery. Located on the square in Thomaston, Georgia, TUAC is a 501-(c)3 non-profit organization and is well known as a presenter of the arts, a supporter of local artists, a contributor to adult and student art education, and an effective influence upon decisions pertaining to the quality of life in Upson County. The mission of TUAC is, "to enrich the lives of all citizens by providing the highest quality arts programming possible”. TUAC will provide artists with a blank panel to create an original work of art to be sold to the general public. All auction proceeds will go towards TUAC Gallery improvements.

About the Artist’s Panel:

From Dick Blick.com: These ready-to-paint panels primed with acrylic provide an exceptional painting surface for oils and acrylics. The fine, canvas-like tooth of the surface allows for great brush control and intensity of color. Gently sanding the surface of the board with very fine sandpaper produces an even finer tooth or a totally smooth surface, ideal for detail work, while still retaining the layer of gesso. The panel is heavy-duty, warp-resistant MDF & feature a cradled birch plywood frame mounted flush to the edge of the panel. The sides can be stained, waxed, or painted if desired.

To Participate:

Send $10 (non-refundable. Checks paid to TUAC), along with all of your contact information (Name, Address, Phone Number, Email, Website) to the Thomaston Upson Arts Council c/o Art Squared P.O. Box 211 Thomaston, GA 30286. You will receive one (1) blank panel per $10 fee (2 panels for $20, 3 Panels for $30, 3 panel limit). The Art Squared Project theme is “Nature” and is open to interpretation by each artist. Application to the Art Squared Project constitutes a commitment to create and deliver artwork to the TUAC gallery via postal mail or artist drop-off by Tuesday, July 20, 2010. Failure to return panels will not result in a refund of the artist fee. Late panels will not be accepted. TUAC reserves the right to reject or remove any artwork from the project at any time.

About the Art Squared Project Display & Reception:

A reception and silent auction for the Art Squared Project will be held on Thursday, July 29th at 6 p.m. All artwork will have a starting bid of $40. All proceeds will be used towards TUAC Gallery improvements. Artists will be recognized at the reception and will receive a complimentary one year membership to TUAC, along with a $10 gift certificate for the TUAC Gallery and Gift Shop. Information about each artist will be made available on the TUAC blog.

FAQs:

What artistic medium can I use on the panels?

Any medium (acrylics, oil, watercolors, etc.) can be used on the panels as long as the dimensions are not changed. The “Nature” theme is open to artists’ interpretation.

Do I have to be a TUAC member to participate?

Not at all. The Art Squared Project is open to all artists over 18 living in the Middle Georgia area.

What if my painting isn’t sold?

All unsold paintings will be placed in the TUAC Gift Shop or bought from the original artist for a discounted price ($20) after the Art Squared Project Auction.

So, I’m not going to make any money from this?

No, but we appreciate your donation of time and talent and can provide you with information for tax purposes. All participating artists will get a complimentary 2010-2011 membership (a $15 value) for TUAC, a $10 gift certificate, and recognition on the TUAC website. This is an excellent opportunity to get your work in front of the public.

Chateau Elan Paint Out, May 8 and 9, 2010

Time: May 8, 2010 to May 9, 2010

Location: Chateau Elan

Street: 100 Rue Charlemagne

City/Town: Braselton, GA 30517

Website or Map: http://chateauelan.com

Phone: 678-425-0900

Here are the details for the paintout at Chateau Elan - May 8 and 9 from 9 to 5 or later if the Artist wishes.

Go north on I-85 towards Braselton and you will see signs and the Inn on the left.

We will park behind the Winery. The Winery is the building straight in front of you as you turn into the property. Take your first right after entering the property towards the Inn and keep following around until you are behind the Winery.

Toby Reid will bring a table and a clip board for signing in to put in the parking lot.

The Inn (white table cloth) and the Winery (casual) both serve food if anybody wants. It might be a good idea on Mothers Day to check at the Inn if they are doing reservations.

There are many restaurants turning left out of the property and a Grocery store. There is one gas station ( BP ) but I would not use it as it is very expensive per gallon.

Chateau Elan is not providing anything for us, except to be on their property; so everybody needs to bring what they will need for the days. There are restrooms in the Winery, Spa and the Inn. I don't know if the Stables have restrooms but I would guess that they do. There is another property there called Legends at Chateau Elan that has gates with codes to get in and we have not contacted them as it is a porivate home and golf course division.

Please be courtious to the golfers,Spa and tennis folks that will be there.
