Finally! A Beach Rental for Plein Air Painters ONLY!

Dear fellow artists,

I hope you will pass this on to all your members for their review or add a link on your website.

“Plein Paradise” is located at 229 Court St. in St. Joe Beach, Florida. This two bedroom one bath house is located 1 1/2 blocks from the beach and is fully furnished with all new furniture. It is 40 minutes east of Panama City, 40 minutes west of Apalachicola and 20 minutes from Cape San Blas. My wife and I decided this year to rent our little hideaway exclusively to artists! I am a member of the Plein Air Painters of Georgia and the Gulf Alliance for Local Arts - GALA. I have been on many paintouts and know how expensive it can be staying in hotels and eating out all the time. We are setting the rent at a very reasonable rate for PLEIN AIR PAINTERS ONLY!

Please visit my website for all the details if you are interested in getting away to paint in a magical area. You will see why they call it “The Forgotten Coast”.

Just go to www.allenrodgers.com and click on Plein Paradise at the top of the page.

Thanks in advance,

Thursday, September 4, 2008
5:30-7:30pm FREE
Bring a friend and enjoy amazing fine art from local Georgia Artists as we celebrate the work of Juried Show winner, Keith Barnett, and a retrospective "All Mirth & No Matter"
September Exhibitions
Sponsored by H&H Systems (Pat & Gene Hussey) and Chickfila Jonesboro Dwarf House
“All Mirth and No Matter” – Keith Barnett, 2008 Juried Show Winner
Through the use of a variety of mediums, Mr. Barnett seeks to understand the conflicting and complimentary universal processes of order and chaos. While this quest brings a wide range of interests to explore, his passions of classic portraiture, still lifes and landscapes are most prominent. The results of his process are beautiful studies of the natural world, set expertly in the most appropriate medium pulled from his wide portfolio of color pencil, acrylic, watercolor or paper collage. Show Dates: Sept 3-September 26
“The Road Traveled”
“Oh the places you’ll go!” – Dr. Seuss. Our lives lead us down many roads, whether it is the one less traveled or a heavily worn path. The open road calls to some. For others, only one that matters is that road which leads home. For still others, it isn’t the physical trip through life that is important, but the creative process or spiritual journey. See how the Exhibiting Artists creatively interpret this month's theme in a wide range of mediums and disciplines. thru September 26

A gallery we spoke to suggested that many galleries and art consultants
handle the estates of artists and are often seeking additional galleries
to represent the artworks. We welcome advertising for estates.
Additionally, we welcome anyone seeking to reach art galleries, including
framers, lighting companies, and other services to the gallery industry.

4. View New Video About the Magazine:
We have produced a new video and posted it online to answer some of your
questions about the magazine. Click below to view it.

August Exhibitions
Sponsored by Arts Clayton Board of Directors
“Explorations – Art and Science”
Science and art are sister disciplines. The work of the scientist and artist involves exploration, discovery and method. Science has used visual means to communicate knowledge dating back to astronomical observations. Historically artists have been inspired by science and have employed scientific methods in developing materials and techniques. The exhibition shows that scientific and artistic points of view are compatible and each of the four artists uses science as the foundation for their work with a broad range of scientific disciplines represented.
Two of the artists work within a medical and anatomical context. Marti Hand explores biological science, the pharmaceutical/medical interface and its relation to health and Ann Rowles uses the deceptively benign techniques of crochet and knitting to explore disturbances of the body. Judy Parady chooses lyrical words used by particle physicists as a source for visual interpretations of the invisible in painting and three dimensional works. Mary O’Horo draws from themes found in new physics and astrophysics. These associations become translated into an abstract language which creates it own reality. This body of work offers a unique interpretation of scientific themes and an opportunity to consider the continuing influence of science in the arts. Show dates: August 5-September 2
“The Road Traveled”
“Oh the places you’ll go!” – Dr. Seuss. Our lives lead us down many roads, whether it is the one less traveled or a heavily worn path. The open road calls to some. We are delighted to announce a new Plein Air event for your calendar - the Wyoming Plein Air. This new Plein Air event is a partnership between the Link Gallery and Deselms Fine Art in Cheyenne and we aim to make this inaugural national painting event one of the largest painting events and art exhibitions of its kind in Wyoming and, eventually, in the Rocky Mountain Region. We are now accepting 2008 Event entries for the selection process and attach our call for entries.

This year we are looking for approximately 60 artists who paint "en plein aire" to participate in this major outdoor painting event this summer in Downtown Cheyenne and across Wyoming. The diverse subject matter will include historic buildings, botanical gardens and other local scenes of interest as well as the prairies, deserts and mountains of the wild places, the National Forests and the National Parks.

We already have sponsorship and awards totaling some $5,500 lined up including an award for excellence from our major sponsor, Southwest Art, who is giving a ½ page ad worth $2,500 to the first prize winner. We have further sponsiorship and awards in the pipeline and we also plan social events for the artists. Further information is presented in the attached application form.

We hope you will be as excited as we are about this new event. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information and we look forward to receiving your application.

Marketing opportunity

Hi,
I would like to inform you of a new monthly market that will begin operating hopefully by July or August 2008 in Sandy Springs. It will take place on the last Sunday of every month in a very unique location. It will encompass not only arts and crafts but also foreign exhibitors of homemade products such as food, clothing, jewelry. It will be very rustic, exciting and a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon browsing. The vibe will be incredible because of it's unique location. The cost of a stand roughly the size of a car parking space will be only $20.00 for the day. This amount might increase over time depending on the success of the venture.

I would sincerely like to request that you pass this email on to your members, so that they might have another avenue available to them to show off their talent

I look forward to discussing any questions you might have.

Many thanks,
Allan Traub

Spring 2008 Plein Air Tips from Bill Davidson

(Bill Davidson is an Atlanta ares Plein Air painter who gives workshops in the area)

Spring Tips for Us Painters

By Bill Davidson

Hi All,
I am just back from 2 weeks of real hard studying out west, in time for the fabulous spring season. Another teacher and I discussed what really helps, and we decided repetition, because we always need to be reminded of what works and does not work.
With that in mind, get around some good artists in the spring, and get “fresh” eyes, and immerse yourself in your art. Review your notes and repeat the basics. We must always be growing, which means more learning.
I spend a “focused” month every year trying to “grow,” and see well, and learn things that make it easier. You don’t have to do that, but repeating what works and growing will absolutely make you better. It helps to have someone around you, on occasion, doing it right, as we all slip.
Plein air is hard, but exhilarating and really fun. You need Plein air painting and studio painting to grow.
Begin with this for your Plein air outings: Remember to pay attention to variety in the big shapes. Use a good sized brush and get the light “read” right. Then quit the sketch before you lose the light “read.” Let it dry, and add detail later, if you want. But watch carefully how the detail may not add to the light “read.” These good sketches will make all your paintings better.
By “light read” I mean to get your values to portray the light and shade well – the feeling of it.
I have some really loose studies that I put on my website http://billdavidson.biz , so look at my loosest ones if you like, and aim for that unfinished look. You will love doing it.
Hope to see you out there.

March Newsletter

March 2008

To: Plein Air Georgia Members
From: Phyllis Franklin in Thomaston, Georgia

I have great news. Jim Greenwood of Acworth, Georgia has agreed to manage and keep PAG on line and serve as a board member. Thank you so much Jim. I know I hear applause and cheers from everyone. Thank you too to BJ Wright and Jo Adang who have agreed to stay on as editors and advisory board members. I too will stay on as an advisory board member to lend support to Jim.

Look for a letter from Jim soon telling you of plans he has for 2008. Also look for a membership invoice to come to you. When you get this invoice, just follow the instructions given to you by the Pay Pal folks. Your support moving PAG forward is so appreciated.

You do not have to become a member of PAG to participate in most events but by becoming a member you will show your support for the organization, its mission and activities. We also provide a Yahoo discussion group which will alert you event news via email and encourage you to join at your earliest convenience. Go to www.yahoo.com and select groups, enter the name Plein Air Georgia in the group search box and that will give you a box to click and join. Joining the discussion group is not mandatory but just nice if you want to receive news via email.

It is an honor to be a member of PAG. At Plein Air Georgia, we have no preference as to style, materials used, or artistic interpretation. These are all personal choices that contribute to the unique expression of each artist while they paint 'en plein air'. Likewise, we think honest work by novice or professional is equally valid. The challenges and rewards of plein air painting are open to all. Although many of us are not die-hard plein air purist, we all enjoy painting outside and enjoy networking with fellow artists who enjoy the same. Some of us claim the title of plein air artists and others just enjoy the occasional outing. No matter how much or how little you are able to get outside and paint, all painters and patrons alike are welcome as members of PAG.

Join us for Workshops- paintouts- forum discussions, friendship
There is always something new to learn to push us beyond our comfort zone. Our mission is to serve the membership by providing a means to communicate with each other, share event and workshop information and provide a showcase for our work

To join, send an email to pleinairga@yahoo.com requesting membership. An invoice will be sent to you. Please provide us with the following:

Name - Email address
Website URL if you have one
Short Biography or artist statement
Physical location – town – county -Local art organization
Three or four images of your work in jpg or gif format along with art size, title and medium.

We are excited to have you as a member us no matter if you join with full membership or just join the Yahoo discussion Group. If you would like to become a contributing editor or serve on the advisory board for your area with post capabilities to the news blog, which feeds into the PAG web, let us know and we can set that up for you. Web membership is not required to be a news correspondent nor is membership at the Yahoo discussion group. What is important is being able to stay informed so we don't miss an event, resource or opportunity that takes place somewhere members might like to attend. If you have questions, just send a message to pleinairga@yahoo.com and that will reach the PAG staff.

Pastel Workshop

Greetings Artist Friends,

I will have the pleasure of hosting pastel artist Kippy Hammond (www.kippyhammond.com ) at Historic Mill Studio in Greensboro, Ga. in April if there is enough interest. Below is information about Kippy and outline of one of her pastel exploration laboratories. Please pass this on to others you know who may be interested and art guild members and/or add to your calendar/newsletter of events. I will be coordinating with her this week if it looks like we have enough to reserve her. She will be in the States during April and has given me the first opportunity to host her. We will be negotiating registration fee, date, and number of days, once I hear from those interested. Once the date is set I will send registration, dates, registration and materials fees and will register in order of receipt of deposit. This workshop is suitable for debutante through advanced students in pastel. When you reply please let me know the following:

1. Your level of experience with pastels : advanced, intermediate, debutante

2. Are you interested in two, three or four days?

3. Are in interested in laboratory workshop, en plein air/composition workshop or both.

4. From where will you be traveling?__________________

Historic Mill Studio is in Greensboro, Ga. and is approximately 70 miles east of Atlanta, 70 miles west of Augusta, and 30 miles south of Athens. 40 miles north of Milledgeville, and 60 miles north east of Macon. Accommodations are available.

KIPPY HAMMOND

Kippy Hammond presently resides in France for the majority of the year, completing commissioned work from clientele in the U.S. and Europe , and painting the French countryside. Kippy will guide you through a pastel “laboratory” where you can experience a variety of surfaces and techniques. Expand your current boundaries by using under paintings, turpentine wash, and watercolor wash, combined with dry pastel. The purpose of this workshop is to experiment and experience a wide variety of papers and techniques-----you will take with you a fresh perspective and ideas to incorporate into your own work.

Kippy Hammond is a native Georgian pastel artist who has been recognized in numerous exhibitions and solo shows receiving state, regional, and international awards. She was the guest of honor for the first Salon International de Pastel Exposition a Vernon en Normandie in 2002 and represented France in the 2003 Europastel Exposition in Italy and Russia . She is a signature member of the Southeastern Pastel Society and a founding member of the Atlantic Coastline Artist Guild. Ms Hammond is represented by Monty Stabler Galleries in Birmingham , AL and Ann Jacob Gallery in Highlands NC.

SAMPLE OUTLINE OF PASTEL EXPLORATION LABORATORY

2-Day workshop with Kippy Hammond at Historic Mill Studio in Greensboro, Ga.

This two day laboratory workshop is designed for the students to explore:

various types of pastels and supports available to the pastelists;
various approaches in expanding the boundaries of pastels, using under-paintings of turpentine wash, watercolor, and oil wash;
different "touches" used in application that can only be acquired by experimentation
The class has two segments:

Laboratory stations, featuring different supports and types of pastels, where all the students can experiment the different “touch and feel” of these materials and the effect of application.
Instructional segment incorporates demonstration, lecture, and individual assistance for each student
The instructional part of the workshop would be divided as follows:

First day 9-12 AM - Introduction, demonstration of underpainting with turpentine wash, preparation of hard boards to be used on2nd day.

First Day 2-5 PM - Students will start and complete painting on Ersta sanded paper with turpentine wash.

2nd Day 9-12 AM - Quick demo of watercolor underpainting on Wallis paper, students will start and complete painting on Wallis paper

2nd Day 2-5 PM - Students will start and complete still life on sanded boards prepared on first day.

If there is interest I will add an optional one or two days for composition and en plein aire workshop.

The size formats will be kept very small in order to push through the painting schedule so students can get a complete idea of how the different pastel projects build and layer.

It is emphasized that this workshop is for the student to experiment and explore. The students should not anticipate producing a painting to be complete, signed, and framed. (There are, however, usually some very fine paintings that come out of this, but I will reiterate that the time they spend with me is to gain some knowledge of the different approaches to working with pastel and to try and master these approaches after the workshop.)

All supplies will be furnished by Kippy and students will pay materials fee ( I will give you that information as soon as I know).
